We know, we know—grocery shopping isn’t exactly on the top of the list of things you’re looking forward to on your next 30A vacay. But we truly believe that a well-planned, well-executed trip to the supermarket at the beginning of your holiday is the key to elevating your South Walton vacation from mediocre to magnificent. Let us explain.
Imagine for a moment that you’re just waking up on your first day of vacation—perhaps in a stunning oceanfront villa like Diamond Dunes. The sun is glittering off the turquoise waves and a gentle ocean breeze rustles the curtains. Instead of ordering expensive room service or wandering down to the lobby of your hotel for stale coffee, you stroll out onto your private deck still in your pj’s, with a warm mug of coffee in your hand. The coffee you just brewed and prepared exactly as you like it at home. Ahhh…
Then the kids start waking up. The pantry is full of their favorite cereal and the fridge has plenty of juice for everyone. Later in the afternoon, after spending the day at the beach, everyone is “sorta” hungry but no one really wants to leave the comfort of the fabulous, gulf front porch. So you prepare a casual cheese tray or some sandwiches and cold drinks, and you all relax on the deck while the kids run back and forth to the sand. In the evenings—instead of trying to pick a local restaurant that everyone can agree on—your family watches the sunset while grilling fresh seafood on the barbecue. For dessert, the kids roast s’mores over the coals.
All this vacation bliss would be impossible without a quick trip to—or a delivery from—the local grocery store. Here are a few of our favorite spots to stock up on your first day on 30A.
Grayton General Store
32 E. County Highway, Grayton Beach
We’ll start small, at this popular mom-and-pop store located at the corner of Scenic Highway 30A and Highway 283. Everyone from locals to tourists alike seems to agree that “if you need it, they have it.” They have the usual grocery selections—from peanut butter to paper towels—but they also specialize in all sorts of beach items, too.
From beach hats to toys to chairs, this is a great spot to stop if you forgot something on your way to the shore. There’s also a yummy deli counter that serves delicious burritos, BLTs, burgers, and breakfast fare. There’s even a spot within Grayton Grocery Store to rent bikes, book a charter boat trip, or rent a stand-up paddleboard.
For The Health Of It
2217 West Co. Highway 30A, Blue Mountain Beach
Another one of our favorite spots to stock up is For The Health Of It—a sublime, organic juice and smoothie bar that also carries a fantastic selection of groceries and produce. If you’re interested in experiencing some local products, this is the place to go. From grass-fed beef to fine baked goods to gorgeous golden honey—there’s a ton of locally sourced groceries to choose from here. And if organic is your thing, you can take your pick of the finest organic eggs, cheese, beans, grains, raw foods, coffee, and snacks.
While you’re here, don’t miss out on the fabulous menu of fresh juices and smoothies. Our personal favorite is the Santa Rosa Sunshine—a delicious blend of mango, coconut milk, and pina colada juice. And for the ultimate vacation indulgence, book a massage with one of their licensed massage therapists that will get all of those kinks out.
Publix Supermarket at South Walton
2038 US Highway 98 W, Santa Rosa Beach
Every Floridian knows that few grocery store chains beat the service and selection of your local Publix grocery store. Clean, efficient, and affordable, Publix is a one-stop-shop for all of your grocery needs—and then some. Like most large chain grocery stores, Publix has a bakery, a butcher shop, a seafood counter, a full-service deli, a florist, and a pharmacy.
For added convenience, they have an amazing app for your phone so you can order deli items ahead of time. They also have curbside pick-up and delivery options, too.
The Fresh Market
4495 Commons Drive W, Destin
Recently voted the #1 best supermarket in the US, The Fresh Market is a bright, pleasant store with a huge selection and great prices. They offer a fantastic butcher shop, an impressive seafood market, and a colorful produce section that would rival any farmer’s market.
They also have a program called Little Big Meals—easy to prepare, pre-packaged meals for four that you can cook in the privacy of your Dune Allen Realty rental home. Choose from mouth-watering options like Crab Cakes or Chicken Primavera. The Fresh Market will also deliver all of your items directly to your front door.
Goatfeathers Seafood Market
Multiple Locations, Santa Rosa Beach & Inlet Beach
A South Walton staple since 1988, Goatfeathers is the perfect spot to pick up the freshest gulf seafood. From oysters to shrimp to amberjack that was probably swimming in the ocean that morning, pick up some tasty seafood to prepare at home. You can also check out their popular restaurant too. They serve soups, salads, burgers, and seafood dishes for lunch and dinner.
